Question: Should I wear a pink bow-tie when I give my keynote speech?
Elmer Fudd, Chicago, IL,
Answer: Elmer, although a pink bow-tie may be a good choice for some occasions, it really depends on what forum the keynote is in and how well you know your audience. Perhaps if you are giving a keynote on Breast Cancer awareness and wish to represent the cause's colors, then it may be a good choice. But if you are giving a keynote on “Why everyone should wear a tie,” it may not be a good choice because your viewers will view you as being hypocritical.
Question: Should I act out, or be more reserved when trying to pitch my product?
Sam Busak, Deal, NJ.
Answer: Great question Mr. Busak. This is really one of those questions with an in-between answer. Yes, you should definitely act out and be entertaining, for this will grab the audience's attention, and they will find you appealing. Just make sure you don't overdo it. Pitchmen can be very overactive sometimes, and it can really make them appear foolish and elementary. The key is finding the right balance. Check out our examples section to get a better picture. Good Luck!
Question: What should I do if my mind goes blank?
Bob Marley, Brooklyn, NY.
Answer: Bob, in the unfortunate case where your mind goes blank, the most important thing to do is to stay calm and not to panic. Try to remember the last topic you were speaking about. It's also helpful to have some type of aid to remind you what to say such as note cards or a reference monitor. In the eventuality that you do blank out, take a deep breath and remember what you are doing: presenting a new product that you put your heart and soul into.
Question:What if I need to use the bathroom during my presentation?
Big Boy, Los Angeles, CA.
Answer: Wow, this is a tough one! I think that if it really isn't that urgent, try to hold it in. But, if you think that you will start losing focus, in most cases, you will have an ear-piece and someway to communicate with the hosts. Call for an intermission or 5 minute break and do your business then.
Question: I feel like I can't relate to an audience that is much older than me. What should I do?
Mr. Fox, Atlanta, GA.
Answer: Start playing BINGO! Just kidding! Although it may be hard to relate to a completely different generation, it is one of the characteristics of being a good presenter. Maybe, you are not the person for this role and perhaps you can help out the project in a different way. But, if you insist in being the presenter, then all you have to do is rehearse. Think about what such an audience wants to hear and what would keep them attentive.
